Physical Symptoms: Aches & Pains, Headaches & Migraine, Digestive
Problems, Sleep Problems.
Results shown are from a USAID funded study to determine the
efficacy of an InHappiness laughter-assisted behavior change program
in a highly stressed group of healthcare workers providing care to
adults and children infected/affected by HIV and AIDS.
Baseline results were taken before the program started and again
periodically over six months. These results from detailed and validated
measures are in keeping with results from hundreds of other highly-
stressed groups.

Why are these Results Important?
•
Physical Symptoms — These symptoms are largely driven by stress.
The dramatic reductions shown result largely from success in stress reduction
by InHappiness participants.
•
Aches & Pains - Back and neck pain — a common result of worry, stress
and depression — is an important cause of productivity loss (Loeppke, Taitel et
al., 2009), and contribute significantly to absenteeism and presenteeism (NIPH,
•
Headaches & Migraine are leading cause of lost productivity,
accounting for 20.5 per cent of productivity losses according to Goetzel et al.
In one study the loss of productivity from migraine-related presenteeism was
measured as greater than the total cost of absenteeism (Burton et al. 2004).
•
Digestive Problems including chronic constipation and diarrhea, IBS,
over- and under-eating, indigestion, ulcers, and gas reflux can severely
reduce productivity through loss of energy, absenteeism and presenteeism.
Stress is a major driver of digestive problems. The significant reduction in
stress typical of InHappiness programs often results in dramatic reductions in
these problems as illustrated here.
•
Sleep Problems — Lack of sleep exacts a heavy toll on perception and
judgment. In the workplace, its effects can be seen in reduced efficiency
and productivity, errors, and accidents (Harvard).
Compared to healthy individuals, individuals suffering from sleep loss, sleep
disorders, or both are less productive, have an increased health care
utilization, and an increased likelihood of accidents (NIH).
Insomnia costs the average US worker 11.3 days, or $2,280 in lost
Almost 20% of all serious car crash injuries in the general population are
associated with driver sleepiness, independent of alcohol effects. Famous
workplace accidents caused by lack of sleep include the tragedy at the
Bhopal, India, chemical plant; the nuclear reactor meltdowns at Three Mile
Island and Chernobyl; and the grounding of the Star Princess cruise ship and
the Exxon Valdez oil tankers (NIH).
